From Goodreads:

On Solange’s sixteenth birthday, she is going to wake up dead. As if that’s not bad enough, she also has to outwit her seven overprotective older brothers, avoid the politics involved with being the only daughter born to an ancient vampire dynasty, and elude Kieran Black—agent of an anti-vampire league who is searching for his father’s killer and is intent on staking Solange and her entire family.

Luckily she has her own secret weapon—her human best friend Lucy—who is willing to defend Solange’s right to a normal life, whether she’s being smothered by her well-intentioned brothers or abducted by a power-hungry queen. Two unlikely alliances are formed in a race to save Solange’s eternal life—Lucy and Solange’s brother Nicholas, and Solange and Kieran Black—in a dual romance that is guaranteed to jump start any romance-lover’s heart.

Even fans of the genre who’ve seen it all will find a fresh read with kick-butt characters and family dynamics that ring true for all brothers and sisters—vampire or otherwise.

Kimberly's review:

I'm not afraid to admit I'm playing catch up. There are so many good books out there, sometimes it takes me a while to get around to reading ones I've heard about. Like Hearts At Stake.

But as the fourth book in the series, Bleeding Hearts, came out in December 2011, I thought - now is as good a time as any to start a series!

And wow. What a start!

Well written, funny and fast paced, Hearts at Stake is a wonderful tale of vampires, young love and destiny. The book moves back and forth between Solange, the vampire princess born and prophesized to inherit the throne, and her best friend Lucy, a mortal girl whose bark is as fierce as her bite.

I love Solange's story. She is constantly badgered and looked at as a piece of meat, to make vampire babies with, and rule the world. Her suitors have never met her. She is in danger from bounty hunters. Oh, and her vampire transition is upon her and she will be helpless during it all. Hopefully she'll survive. But Solange isn't weak. She's strong in character, dedicated to her best friend, and maybe just a little confused for the feelings she's having towards this vampire hunter named Kieran.

I can see why Lucy is Solange's best friend. Lucy's voice is distinct, hilarious and solid. I love the way her mind works, her thought process and her braveness. She is definitely someone you would want to have on your side. Um, did I mention she was hilarious? Seriously funny. And the chemistry between her and vampire Nicholas is dreamy and a little bit bashful. He loves to pick on Lucy. Need I say more? He is Solange's brother, after all.

I was so enthralled by this book, I went out and bought the next books in the series. (In my defense, they come in a three-pack.) It's fun YA paranormal romance. How can you resist?

Thank you Ms. Harvey. I'm a fan!

I received this book free of charge from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This, in no way, affected my opinion or review of this book.
