Makeover by Oliver Jeffers

Alybee and I went to Mrs. Nelson's this afternoon to meet Oliver Jeffers, the author of The Heart and the Bottle. Oliver is one of my favorite artists and I am so, SO grateful to Mrs. Nelson's for hosting this event! I had despaired of ever seeing any of his paintings, and all of a sudden there I was, meeting him in person!

While we were waiting for him to arrive, we hung out with a great bunch of author/illustrators...

From left to right, Alybee, James Burks, Bob Boyle, Dan Santat, and me, frootjoos! (I'll give you a minute to click on the links and bookmark their pages. Got 'em? Ok, back to the post!) We also met Candace Ryan, author of Animal House. (Forthcoming--mark your calendar for August!)

When Oliver got there, he read his newest book, The Heart & The Bottle, which is about a little girl (much like any other) whose great curiosity about the world is shaken when (SPOILER: highlight text to read!) her grandfather dies and she decides to hide her heart away in a bottle so that she won't feel hurt anymore. I really identified with this book, with the exception of not having met a "smaller and still curious about the world" person who helped me get my heart out of a bottle--not yet, anyway. (Maybe next year.)

His friend read The Incredible Book-Eating Boy and The Great Paper Caper while Oliver drew bits from the book. I got to take one home! So I have a home makeover a la Jeffers:

We also had a paper plane race! I lost. I was trying to fly my plane while recording a video of the race with the other hand. It just goes to show, you shouldn't try to fly a plane while shooting a video with your camera phone. It ends badly.

Afterwards we waited for all the little kids to get their books signed, so we big kids could go get ours.

I got a whole pile autographed, including my special little copy of How to Catch a Star that came with glow-in-the-dark stars, flashlight, and map of the constellations, and the audio Incredible Book-Eating Boy read by Jim Broadbent. (Aly, I forgot to crack open the CD while we were in the car--will bring it to book club on Sunday.)

When we were on our way home, I realized that the photo of me & Oliver didn't get saved on my camera :(

At first I was pretty bummed. But then I remembered...

I'm an artist too!

I hope you had an awesome day; I did!
